The guide mentions using Shade Shift to give Vayne multiple actions.  I have a skill called "Jade Shift" that does that.

Is this one of those "Same skill, different name" situations between test build and final build?

Actually, it's just us using the wrong name. If you check Vayne's skill list in the Basics section, you'll notice the skill is listed as "Jade Shift", which is the correct name for the skill. If you check the strategies section of his entry, it's marked as "Shade Shift", which is probably where the confusion comes in.

If we ever reference "Shade Shift" anywhere else in the guide, we really mean "Jade Shift." Sorry!

You should start from the first image, okay? And... Mitsuru, here's an image editor. It might be handy if you, the master of resizing, take it with you.

Actually this was a deliberate editing choice on my part. The in-game text refers to the Skill both ways, at least in my copy. "Shade Shift" is on the Grow Book text while "Jade Shift" is on the Skill List in battle.

Now, "Shade Shift" makes sense because Vayne's duplicate appears as something shadowy. The "Jade Shift" name is clearly, to me, the result of a crappy mistranslation by someone who was in too much of a hurry to tell the Japanese "Sha" letter apart from the vaguely similar "Ja" letter, and then the error never got fixed before they did their retail pressing.

While not quite Natsume-caliber, Mana Khemia is still a game with some fairly startling mistranslations that crop up in the system text, so I always tried to use whatever felt like it reflected how the game worked and sometimes avoid referencing system text that felt misleading or likely miswritten. So I will never voluntarily call that Skill of Vayne's "Jade Shift", because that is blatantly not its intended name.

You know, I don't have a degree in writing or a bunch of shinies on my resume, but wouldn't it, in this case, be more helpful to name the skill as it's written ingame as to not confuse the reader? I mean, I hate mistranslations as much as the next guy, but..

Checked the Grow Book while playing tonight and it does indeed say Shade Shift in the Grow Book but Jade Shift everywhere else.

Bizarre.

Yeah the problem is that the game itself calls it both.

No, it's clearly supposed to have one name. There are some other skills in the game that get one name on the Grow Book and then another on the Skill menus, and it's just localization error.

Generally I went with the Grow Book names because they always seemed saner upon comparison, but the other Skill name errors aren't as glaring as Shade Shift vs. Jade Shift.

Now that I think about it, you'll notice New Type KSMM tends to add or drop quotation marks. C'est le jeux, I suppose.

IIRC, Anna and Pamela also have skills where there are name-swap issues. (I see people ask about unlocking particular skills of there all the damn time at GFAQs, and it comes down to the in-combat name not being the same as the Grow Book name.)

I imagine GFAQs will document the discrepancies eventually.
