Best of all, the character on the bottom can still use their Counter levels to punish melee attackers.

In all my time playing this game, including having Adell with his fist holding up every single class of character and monster through several iterations of CoO4 in order to unlock them all, I have never seen a tower base character counterattack.

Which version, Japanese or US?

I doublechecked (with the US version) this morning. Sat there in CoO4, with animations on so I knew I was seeing attacks and not Illusions, getting hit over and over and over for about 20 rounds. I was not attacking or doing anything else, Adell had a counter of 4, and he never countered.

US version.

I'm currently on vacation (without Disgaea 2  Cry) so I can't double check this.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen a towr-holder counter either, and I stack characters alot getting felonies (just 99 to go for most of my dudes! YAY!) I tend to stack 9 guys, and have the 10th deployed toss 'em toward/into the court gate. the tower tends to get attacked from 3 or 4 sides at once, but no counters seen, yet.

My tower-using guys Counter frequently, and yes, in the US version. If it's not happening for you other guys, I'm not sure what to say. Possibly a last-minute version change? If I wasn't dreadfully busy at the moment with other assignments, I'd make a tower and screenie it for proofs.

Well, that's quite vexing. Any clues on what characters those tower bases were, and what they were wearing?

I've got a sword that's +3 Counter, which I have named Excalibutter (given to me by the Lady of the Land O'Lakes). I guess tonight I'll start handing it round to all my characters and see if I can get any of them to counter in towers. Perhaps holding someone automatically gives you a reduction in your counter number, in the same way that Defend does?

---
A bit later: I'm sitting in CoO4 with a Sinner with a counter of 6, and nothing. I've also asked for people's experiences in this gamefaqs thread: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=930240&topic=31085247

So far no one has indicated that they've seen people counter from towers. Just what is the version that you folks use, Lynxara? A prerelease?

It is true that in order to have the guide ready for you guys when the game first comes out, we use pre-release versions. Usually they are 100% identical to the gold master code, and when we can we check the guide against gold master code before we go to print.

But with Disgaea 2, obviously, there have been some wacky discrepancies between different versions in terms of gameplay, resulting in things like the Hyperdrive issue. I have a retail copy now so when I have time I'll compare it against one of my old builds. I restarted my game when I got the retail issue so I haven't actually tried to counter from the base of a tower yet; it's possible it could be one of the little changes that went into the final version. It would be sorta sad if it ended up different, I kept Adell and my Ninjas at the base of my towers for that exact reason.

US retail version here and I have yet to see a counter in almost four hours of continuous tower attacking. Kinda sucks, I'm sitting on an invincible panel with wuss characters but Adell and his 3 counters that he'll whip out on his own all the time hasn't done it even once! ggggaaaahhhhhhh!!!

Two and a half of these four hours is in one place because the rotten suckface Golem is the Item General and is a couple thousand levels above my guys. I got him locked between two towers and a corner. Sure I took my time because I'm eating pizza, but I was on this guy out in the open before I realized I could corner him so my combo percent dropped back to zero a few times.

Something's rotten if my guys are supposed to counter. This golem has like four SP left so all he's doing is attacking, counters would be very freaking helpful.

I'm going to break one of my towers and hope my cute little bogart will steal his health and stop this silly regeneration crap. It's too tiresome.
